Cults & Fountains in Tuscania

Tuscania is one of the loveliest towns in Upper Latium. Built on a hilltop by the Etruscans in the 7th century BC, the town was situated in the river Marta valley, about 10 miles from Viterbo. Thanks to trade and farming, Tuscania soon became one of the richest centers in southern Etruria.

Within 45 Minutes drive from the Port of Civitavecchia, we will arrive to the beautiful and charming city, surrounded by medieval walls inside which very narrow streets will lead you to San Pietro Church, amazing VII c. Romantic church located on the highest spot in the town.

The Cult Route

You will be guided on your tour by an archaeologist across the hilly countryside to visit the two most important Etruscan tombs; Scanni Family tomb and the Queen's Tomb.
The first one excavated in the tufa stone is composed by a round building with a dome ceiling. There will be 10 curved empty spaces maybe used to put religious statues in. Historians do not know if it was used as a cult place an unusual burial place. The Queen's tomb was given the name, when during the first diggings, images with a crowned lady depicted were discovered.

The Water Route

During your guided tour you will discover many fountains located in Tuscania, like the Fontanella, St.Franci's Fountain, The Lavatore Fountain, The Cavalione Fountain, The Bramante Fountain, all those fountains are supplied by the water from the Marta's river, and used in the past mainly by the people for their household neeeds.
Even the Romans used the river's waters to fill the Emperorís Baths. Nowadays a modern, automatic aqueduct, supplies the city with 2 mineral waters; Auaforte and Solfatara.

Because high quality professional drivers are used, to ensure the high quality of services, please book the tour in advance. Your driver/guide will pick you up from the port in the morning and will take you back to the dock in the afternoon.
